I’ve been seeing a lot of sentences in which the subject is “data” and the verb is singular, such as:
“The data was input into Petrel.” or “Viscosity data is very important in the simulation.”
The word “data” is a plural noun; the word “datum” is the singular form of it.
So, correcting the two sentences above:
“The data were input into Petrel.” and “Viscosity data are very important in the simulation.”
How shall we remember this?
Well, just about every Star Trek fan knows that Lt. Commander Data once became assimilated into the Borg, and therefore experienced group (plural) consciousness.
